Culham Race Report
Report by Kay Turner
1st August 2010
Round 12 Summer Series

Portsmouth Motocross Club made a return visit to Culham Moto Parc recently for the twelfth round of their summer series, giving riders the opportunity to get in a last bit of practice before the BSMA Finals. The track was graded and watered to perfection, but with the large volume of riders attending the meeting, the circuit became extremely rough, catching out a few riders, and by the end of the third block the dust was flying thick and fast too!

Over thirty Senior riders were first to the start line, with Rob Muscat straight into the lead from the drop of the gate to secure the first two wins. Having to work hard to try to grab win number three, he fought his way into second spot which secured him the overall win. George Clarke kept in contention for a high placing, and blasted his way into first place in the final moto to secure the race win and finished in second overall ahead of James Rutter. Rutter rode hard to finish in second place in the opening races to take home third overall. Birthday boy Christopher Bayliss had a brilliant start, powering into fourth place from the drop of the gate, but disaster struck mid-race leaving him stranded in 12th place at the finish. But piling on the pressure of the leaders in the remaining motos saw him at full speed to storm his way into third place in both races and secured fourth overall. Thomas Kennedy ensured a top placing, finishing in the top six in all three races to net fifth overall, just one point ahead of Joshua Blunt. Blunt was impressive in race one, flying past the flag in fourth place. With the track rutting up as the day went on, he still secured sixth overall, adding an eighth and a seventh to his fourth.

Trying out his 150 for the first time, Inter Open rider Jordan Bachelor quickly adjusted to the power of the four stroke, and sped away into first place in races one and two. Gaining space on Jack Gardner as each lap passed in race three, he finished in second place and bagged the overall victory. Gardner was hot on Bachelors heels in the opening race, finishing in second, and an excellent race win in the closing moto secured him second overall. Ryan Monckton worked hard to maintain his positions, a brilliant second in race two his best result, and with two third places, he finished the day in third overall. It was close action behind the top three with Louis Schmidt, Liam Taylor and Karl Noble all chopping and changing positions throughout the day. Louis Schmidt pushed his way into third place in the second moto to secure fourth overall. Liam Taylor in his first big wheeled meeting for the club looked impressive and powered hard in the final race to finish in fourth place, bagging fifth overall. Karl Noble enjoyed his day out on the track, blasting his way into fifth place in the middle moto, and secured sixth overall.

An impressive performance by Auto rider Liam Brosnan ensured he would finish the day as overall winner. Chasing the leader in races one and two he netted two second places. But pulling the throttle wide open in the final moto he stormed into the lead to grab the win and secured the overall victory. Cain Marsh had a great start to his day, speeding across the finish line as winner in the opening moto. Disappointed to see the finish flag in the final moto has he started to creep up on Brosnan’s back wheel, he still finish in second place to take home second overall. A confident win in race two ensured Ben Tumber would take up his usual place in the top three, a win and two fourths rewarding him with third overall. A great start for Reggie Gesner who chased the leading duo to the finish line, an impressive third place ensuring a high place at the end of the day. Two further top six finish’s rewarded him with fourth overall. Xavier Cook chased Gesner down in the final two races of the day, just narrowly missing out on passing him in the second race to finish fifth, but got the upper hand in race three to bag another fifth place to finish in fifth overall. Louie Wakefield rode the race of his life in the final moto, a brilliant start pushing him straight in front of his rivals and he kept his nerve to speed past the finish line in third place to finish in sixth overall.

Breathtaking speed at the front of the pack came courtesy of the Inter 85 riders with Josh Coleman and Joe Jefferies fighting for supremacy, but with Colemans early departure in the opening race due to bike problems, Jefferies sped past the chequered flag in fine style to grab the first win. Pushing Coleman all the way home in the next two motos he bagged two seconds, but secured the overall victory. Dylan Hodgkins pushed hard to power into the lead chasing the leaders all the way, a brilliant second in the opening moto securing him second overall. Dean Symons was on the pace too, battling with George Fountain for third overall. With an impressive third place in the second moto he bagged third overall. A brilliant finish for George Fountain in race one saw him cross the line in third place, and battling hard for the rest of the day, he ended the meeting in fourth overall. Aaron Gordon was riding well, keeping within the top six in the opening motos. Keeping at the front of the pack in the final race, a puncture denied him staying in contention for a higher spot, but he pushed on despite the flat and ended the day in fifth overall. Christopher Nuttall was again on good form, but untimely spills denied him from moving further up the field. An impressive sixth in the closing race still secured him sixth overall.

Three different riders grabbed a win each in the Junior class. Jayden Wooloff, Olivier Cook and Harry Wichman battled it out to take over the lead, all riders securing the same positions throughout the day. Wichman became the overall victor as he powered into the lead in the final race, after a mass tangle in the opening moto denied him moving further up the field, but impressively finished in third after having to work his way through from the back and his superb last race victory rewarded him the overall win. Wooloff netted the first race win, storming ahead of the pack and adding a third and second place, he secured second overall. Olivier Cook romped home with the win in the second moto, and like the leading duo, also secured a second and third to finish up in third overall. A great effort by Aiden Williams who shot straight into fourth place in the opening race, and remained in the spot until the finish line. An additional sixth and fifth place rewarded him with fourth overall. Alex Hoyland could have placed higher but getting caught up in the crash on the first lap in the opening moto left him trailing at the back of the pack. But he redeemed himself in the following races, pushing hard at the front to keep in fourth place in both motos to end the day in fifth overall. Liam Jones was another victim of the pile up on lap one, having to work his way from the back of the group into tenth spot. But a great start in race two saw him instantly move into fifth place, his best result of the day and he grabbed sixth overall.

The big boys were next to take to the track, with the VMX and AMX Novice class roaring into action. An awesome battle took place at the front of the pack between rivals Tony Hale and Nick Lynds, Hale smoothly taking the lead in the first and last races. But succumbing to Lynds pressure in race two to finish in third, he still secured the overall win. Lynds tried everything to get back past Hale, but couldn’t match his pace and grabbed two second places to finish in second overall. Paul Wood took full advantage of the leading duos scrap in the second moto to power into first place to grab the win, and with a second place added to his tally he finished in third overall. A battle between father and son ensued the leading trio, with Dave and Aaron Lopez battling it out for the higher positions. Finishing ahead of dad in all three motos, Aaron secured fourth overall with fourth place in each race, whilst dad Dave secured sixth overall, even swapping bikes in the second moto to try to gain extra speed but it wasn’t to be as he slipped further down the table on his sons bike. But two fifth places ensured he placed highly. Making Seb Osborne’s bike work doubly hard and appearing in six races, Sam Williams impressively improved his results throughout the day, picking off riders with ease to move into third place in the final moto, finishing the day in fifth overall.

The peace and tranquillity of the Oxfordshire countryside was shattered as an almost full line-up of AMX riders blasted out of the start gate. The lads were full on at a blistering pace around the track, with a close battle at the front between Matt Bayliss and Seb Osborne. Bayliss secured the first two race wins, but a disappointing fourth place in the final moto denied him the overall win. Osborne moved into the lead after a couple of laps in the last race and kept on the gas till the chequered flag waved him through the finish line, and with his two second places added to his win he grabbed the overall victory, with Bayliss taking second overall. Michael McClurg shot straight into the lead in the final race, and continued to chase Osborne to finish in second. A great finish in the second moto rewarded him with third overall on the day. Jono Parker-Davies was riding at his best, outstanding finishes in each race. Even having to work his way through the pack in race two from near the back into seventh place, his first and last races highlighted his riding ability, two brilliant thirds places rewarding him with fourth overall, just one point off third. Jake Hassell didn’t have the best of starts in all three motos but he still looked highly impressive, at full speed on each lap to net three sixth places to secure fifth overall. Scott Bates had a great opening race, speeding into fourth place, and staying in contention for the rest of the meeting, he took sixth place overall.
