Well hmmmm what can I say, having spoken to a lot of the riders it seemed we shared the same view on the day, not a great place to hold a British Championship putting it politely... I understand they needed to get a lot of water down on the track, but having it 18inches deep in mud was crazy, they tried to make it multi lines by putting out straw bales in practice to keep the riders off the racing line!!!! The outcome was a very muddy (to start) narrow and boring track!!! Im sorry but if this is what British mx is coming to then they wont be getting my support in the future... On the plus side practacally the whole track could be seen, albeit from a distance but I found it lacking in action, despite big jumps, it just seemed to be jump, corner, jump, jump, corner jump, corner etc.... and with the exception of the guys that were really hungry for race wins quite a boring day.
Certain riders need a big shout out, noteabely Brad Anderson, Kritian Whatley and Nev Bradshaw... the latter pulling off his first super pole complete with a broken hand, and only the second time out on the 250!!! ANdo, well what can you say about this guy, heart bigger than his chest, never knows when he's lost and keeps on coming at ya!!! Finally Whatley stepping up to the challange of filling his old man's boots, winning his first Maxxis moto and coming from dead last to 4th in the final moto!!!
Mx2 looked like there could be a new rider in the mix to stop the Cosworth powered Yamahas of Osborne and Tonus with Bradshaw taking a vacant spot in the class and setting the fastest lap dispite still having a broken hand!!! But despite a good start in moto 1 the threat didnt materialise as Osborne Holeshot and cleared off leaving team mate Tonus to come through from a poor start to finish 10 seconds down at the flag.
Moto 2 saw the reverse start with Tonus all over EBB and Osborne way daown the field.. Third distance and Tonus hit the front and Osborne was on a mission and already up to 4th behind Bradshaw and Pocock, by the following lap he was 2nd and cutting into the lead...with 3 laps to go he moved past Tonus and onto another win with Pock 3rd and Bradshaw 4th
Final moto was set to be a great battle as Tonus would not want team mate ZO to have a clean sweep. But Osborne had different ideas, hit the front and the battle was on as Tonus had tucked in behind... Not untill lap 9 did things change and Tonus benefited from a ZO mistake to take a comfortable win to minimise the damage on the day.
Mx1 was the more 'open' class with more potential winners, from Sword, Ando, Dougan, Church and Whatley and from the style of track Dougan and Whatley possibly looked favoured with the pair ariel abilities.
Qualification got shook up in superpole with Ando moving from 4th to pole and Alex Snow on the Lanes Construction Kawasaki leapfrogging everyone from 8th to 2nd just 1 tenth off Ando's time, Whatley was as expected up there a mere 3 tenths down in 3rd, but Dougan dropped 3 places unexpectedly!!!
Moto 1 saw a brave Whatley opt for the inside gate pick while the established stars went to the middle!!! Whatley rounded the turn with Snow and quickley set off to gap the field like he'd done in the final moto at Lyng. Ando was down in 6th. Barr pushed Snow back to 3rd and Sword was chasing Dougan. Dougan dropped it and nearly dropped out of the points putting his rivals up a place.Ando moved past Sword, then Snow and set about catching Barr who had held onto the back of Whatley after the youngster dropped it with an 8 second lead... Whatley was now riding tight with arm pump from the pressure of his first potential win and Barr was snapping the 350 KTM at his heels riding tight lines, one such causing him to stall giving KW the little bit of breathing space he needed... but this allowed Ando to make his move, the bulldog was all over Barty and got past with 3 laps remaining... KW was suffering and Ando was going for the kill... final lap and he went round Whatley for the win!!!
Moto 2 and Whatley was refreshed and looking to make amends as was Dougan, so my two hot tips for track sucess where out front, Whatley went round the outside of Dougie on lap 2 and literally cleared off to take his first Maxxis 450 win!!! Ando came through to 2nd with Dougan claiming 3rd.
Overal was to be between KW and BA and all eyes where on the start to see if KW could pull another cracker... but it was Ando, the bulldog spirit shone through as he romped off to an unchallanged victory and the overall. Whatley was dead last after hitting another riders rear wheel and stalling!!! All 3 CCM riders where inside the top 10, Dougan pulled through from 7th to 2nd with Barty following him home but all eyes where on Whatley's progress as he sliced through the field with a matter of urgency and up to 4th at the flag!!!
