“Cain & Able!”
Report by Kay Turner
Portsmouth Motocross Club
Swanmore – 10th October 2010
Round 15 Summer Series

After the rain spoilt the riders fun and the final round of Portsmouth Motocross Club’s Summer Series was postponed for a week, a good turnout of riders turned up to a dismal Swanmore circuit, but once the sun broke through the cloud, a glorious warm albeit windy day was a welcome resbite to the wet stuff.

The Inter 85 class took to the start line after practice, and a tussel for the top took place between Aaron Gordon and Camlann MacDonald. Gordon pushed ahead in the opening races to snatch the first two wins and took the overall victory. But MacDonald stormed into the lead in the closing stages of the final race after pushing Gordon all the way from the drop of the gate, and crossed the line in first. Adding two second places to his win he secured second overall. Dan Griggs was consistent at the front of the pack, losing his third place in the opening race but redeemed himself to finish in third in the next two motos to finish third in both, and took home third overall. A consistent day on the track for Christopher Nuttall who was on the gas on each lap, not putting a wheel wrong to finish in fourth in each race to end his season on a high in fourth overall. In his last outing on the smaller wheeled 85 bike, Charlie Robinson had an awesome start to his meeting, powering the KTM home to finish in third in the opening race. Two additional sixth places ensured he placed highly and went home happy in fifth overall. Jordan Kittow kept well ahead of his rivals in each race, a brilliant fifth in race two his best result of the day and two sixth places rewarded him with sixth overall.

Vital championship points were at stake in the Junior class, but there was no denying the overall winner. Jake Parker was straight into the lead and remained miles ahead of his rivals in all three motos to easily secure all three race wins and the overall victory. Awsome riding came courtesy of George Stock who kept his head throughout the day, not putting a wheel wrong and secured second overall confidently, two seconds ensuring he scored highly. Following him home all the way, Liam Jones rode brilliantly to chase Stock in each moto, keeping a safe distance so as not to collide but pushed hard enough to ensure he finished in third overall. An outstanding effort by Ben Richards in the first race saw him storm into second place, keeping on the gas until the chequered flag waved him over the line. Just slipping down the race order by a couple of places in the remaining races but two more top six placings rewarded him with fourth overall. A brilliant start for Owen Kerens who saw him near the front of the pack in each race, but unable to maintain his positions he still rode well to keep within the top six. A fourth in the final moto ensured a top six placing and he ended the day in fifth overall. Progressing further up the leader board as each meeting passed, Jamie Griggs closed in on the front runners as each lap went by, and a brilliant fifth in the second race rewarded him with high points to secure sixth overall.

With the start gate jam-packed with adult riders, the fight for the first corner was immense, but Shaun Kerley blasted straight into the lead and held off the opposition in all motos, losing the lead just once throughout the day but was dominant at the front to take the overall victory with three straight wins. After the unfortunate early retirement by Martin Bradbury in the final race, Tony Hale put in his best performance of the day, chasing Kerley to the finish flag to finish in second, the bike working perfectly unlike his van! A fourth, third and second rewarded him with second overall. Showing no signs of fatigue after trekking from Devon the day before, Ben Anstie powered around the track with tremendous speed, moving into third in the final race after a perfectly executed move on the final corner and replicated his first race result to cross the line in third to end the day in third overall. Dan Strudwick had a great day on the track, going head to head with Anstie throughout the day, bashing bars and battling for supremacy into the corners, and two great fourth places rewarded him with fourth overall. Billy Lovegrove followed Strudwick and Anstie in hot pursuit, closing them down in race three to finish in fifth place and took home fifth overall. Matthew Lambert was the second highest placed VMX rider to appear in the top six, powering ahead of his rivals, two impressive sixth places rewarding his hard work with sixth overall.

A great turnout of Senior riders roared up the start straight and from the off, Daniel Maxey took up his regular place at the front of the pack, and remained the leader in all three races. Pulling out a lead ahead of the rest of the pack, he secured all three race wins to take the overall victory. Jordan Carrier was hot on Maxey’s back wheel, and closed in on the leader in the final moto, narrowing the gap until the chequered flag waved. Three second places secured second overall. Chae Jenkinson was a powerhouse, the bright orange crash helmet flashing passed the finish line at an amazing pace, to reward the rider with three third places to take home third overall. Scott Sanders must have had extra Shredded Wheat for breakfast as he was fully charged and ready to blast into action from the drop of the gate! Straight into the front from the off, he remained dominant throughout the meeting, and riding the best set of races of his season he blasted into fourth place in the first two motos, narrowly missing out on fourth in the final moto, but a fifth added to his points tally rewarded him with fourth overall. David Roberts pushed hard to catch Sanders, battling in the opening races to chase him down and pass but had to settle in fifth in races one and two. But he found the extra power in race three to sneak past Sanders and stormed into fourth place to secure fifth overall. Putting in one of his best performances of the year, Charlie Yarlett was on fine form, powering around the track with ease, two brilliant sixth places rewarding him with high points. But even though he only finished in seventh place in race two it was to be his most remarkable result of the day. After having a new clutch fitted the day before, he accidentally jumped the start, slamming the gate and found himself speeding up the start straight in last place. But he stormed through the field to finish in seventh place and was rewarded for his efforts by finishing sixth overall on the day.

Back on the KTM 85 for the final meeting of the Summer, Jordan Bachelor remained unbeatable, three comfortable and outstanding wins easing him into top spot on the day, and with such a lead over the remaining Inter Open riders, even a rare spill on the final corner didn’t stop him from taking home the overall victory. Another disastrous broken chain in practice didn’t bode well for Michael Denton but with the bike fully prepped ready for race one, he stormed straight into second place and remained consistent throughout the day to finish runner-up in each moto to end the day in second overall, three great second places rewarding him a just result. Fully recovered after his nasty crash at the Team Event, Levi Coombes roared back into contention for a high placing and chased Denton in each race, finishing third in each moto to secure third overall. A disastrous first race for Daniel Lawler wasn’t what the talented rider had hoped for, cruising over the line in 11th place. But he shrugged off the result and powered into fourth place in the remaining motos, powering hard around the track to chase down the leading trio. His hard work paid off and he ended the day in fourth overall. Macauley Stock was outstanding on the track throughout the day, battling hard with fellow Stock, Reece who had the misfortune of retiring early due to a broken hand. Two sixth places in the closing races were an excellent way to end his season and he ended the day in fifth overall. Jack Cooper pushed himself to the limit in the second race, powering home in fifth place, a brilliant result for Jack proving he is capable of great results, and he ended his season in sixth overall.

Last out were the Auto riders, and cutting out a couple of the daunting hills, the young riders sped around the track as a blistering pace. Cain Marsh was set for three comfortable wins, race one going according to plan crossing the line in first. Race two saw Marsh hit the deck but he still pulled his way back through to third spot, and ended the day on a high to secure another win and the overall victory. Battling hard to grab a win for himself, Ben Tumber rode hard and battled throughout the day with Liam Brosnan, both riders grabbing a second and third place, but he grabbed the opportunity in race two to slide into the lead and crossed the finish line in first to secure second overall, with Brosnan following him home in second to secure third overall. Luke Williamson was once again hot on the pace, and was hot in pursuit of the leading trio, a consistent set of fourth places rewarded him with fourth overall. Xavier Cook didn’t let Williamson out of his sights and followed him home in each race finishing fifth in each moto to finish in fifth overall. A great battled followed between Louie Wakefield, Harry White and Jamie Turner. With White back from injury, he put in a great effort in the final moto to finish in sixth but narrowly missed out on sixth overall by just one point in the end. Wakefield fought hard with Turner to secure a higher placing, and with two sevenths and a sixth he secured sixth place on the day.
