A glorious weekend welcomed a great turnout of riders for the rescheduled twelfth round of Portsmouth MX Clubs summer series, at the outstanding Grittenham circuit in Wiltshire. Glorious sunshine and warm temperatures plus a brilliantly prepared and watered track rewarded the spectators with some amazing action as the riders enjoyed four blocks of racing.
With the Auto and Junior classes combined, it was great to see the younger riders keeping up with the Juniors, Luke Williamson proving his worth to appear in the top three of both classes, but dominated the Autos with four straight wins to take the overall victory. Liam Brosnan had bike problems but still rode brilliantly to secure three second places and a third to finish up in second overall. Liam Gale fought hard throughout the day with Brosnan, chasing him home in three motos after a great second in race one to finish the day in third overall.
There was an immense battle in the Juniors between a handful of riders, but Charlie Cole once again reigned supreme despite a crash whilst trying to overtake on the last corner, and with two first places secured the overall. Liam Jones saved the best for last as he stormed into the front and pulled out a comfortable lead to win the fourth moto, ensuring second place was his. A brilliant performance by Ryan Tanner saw him fighting hard for a win, edging further up the field as the day went on, securing second place in race three to finish the day in third overall.
The start gate was bursting as the VMX, AMX Novice and EVO riders took centre stage, with Matt White dominating the combined group with three wins, but a no-show in race three denied him the overall. Tony Hale took charge in race four as he fought hard to push his way to the front of the pack and did so in fine style, pulling away from the chasing pack to secure the last race win and took the overall victory. Mark Morris rode consistently well, keeping his face in the leading few, and pushed his way into second place in the last two motos to secure second overall. Keeping his rivals behind him, Tim Yates rode mid-pack in the combined group, but did enough to work his way into the VMX top six by race three, two great fourth places rewarding him with third overall.
Despite Andy Hakes brilliant three first places in the Novice class, a disastrous crash in the final moto saw him limping off mid-race, which left Louise Powell taking control, despite not being able to secure a win, her brilliant holeshot saw her leading the entire pack for a couple of laps, and with three second places she won the class overall. Matt Smith and Robert Grant battled it out for behind Powell, despite an outstanding first place for Grant in race three, Smith took second, with Grant finishing in third.
A handful of EVO riders braved the circuit, pushing their bikes to the limit, but Tyler Proudfoot wiped the floor and secured four race wins to take the overall win ahead of dad Ian in second.
Some top names presented themselves in the AMX class who were next to the start line. Dexter Marks was unbeatable, annihilating the rest of the field in the first three motos, but the most commendable performance came in race four, as after one lap he lost his seat and had to endure the entire race sitting on a very uncomfortable ride! With only one lap to go he lost his lead but still secured the overall victory. Zac Blackwell was back after two months of recuperation following an injury and chased Marks in each race, closing down the leader in the final race to secure the victory and claimed second overall. Local lad Kurt Freegard rode consistently, and despite being unhappy with his results and a spill, he still secured third overall with four fourths places.
Four races, four different winners in the Senior class, but it was race twos winner Chae Jenkinson who deserved the overall win, as he persevered to push his way to the front of the pack, brilliant starts once again his forte and with a first, second, third and fourth he secured the overall win. Ayrton Fiorenzio grabbed the third race win, and battled hard at the front during each race, doing just enough to secure second overall. After bagging the first race win, Dan Maxey stayed in contention of securing another, but after a disastrous second race, he battled hard to stay in the top group, and with two third places, he finished the day in third overall.
The 85cc riders were out next, with the bigger wheeled riders taking control of the group, Jordan Bachelor narrowly missing out on four straight wins, a slight spill in race one denying him a clean sheet. But three perfect race wins in the following races secured him the overall. Josh Coleman appeared unhappy on his new bike, but his results didn’t reflect this as he stormed into third place in the first three races, moving into second in race four to take second overall. George Fountain worked his way up through the field as the day wore on, starting in the top six in the first race, and securing a third place by the end of the day to take home third overall.
Stefan Millward was outstanding in the smaller wheeled class, showing his face in the top six in the combined group by race four, with two wins and two seconds, he claimed the overall victory in his class. Olivier Cook returned to his club, blasting straight into the lead in the first race but a nasty spill in race two denied him grabbing the overall. But the last race win was his and he finished the day in second overall. Tom Gathercole was firing on all cylinders and despite a snapped exhaust, a spill and being showered by petrol he still managed to finish the day in third overall, two brilliant seconds his just reward for a great effort on the track.
